How To Stop Your Holga Back Falling Off
July 30th, 2008 by DurkinPosted in Tutorials
“Oh no, the back of my Holga just fell off. is my film ruined?” is a forum topic I have seen so many times.
There are a number of different ways that you can keep the back of your Holga on, to stop that light getting in and ruining your film when you are least suspecting it. All of them are inexpensive and easy to do.
my first piece of advice is ditch those clips. They are pretty useless and cannot be trusted. That film you have inside is going to cost you your weekly pocket money to develop at your local lab, so you want 12 good frames.
Here are some good, secure replacement options that you have.
Use Electrical Tape

Probably the number one way of keeping the back on your Holga camera is using electrical tape. This can be picked up at any hardware store, or gardening center. I suggest getting black as it looks neater and also helps to stop light leaks. (personal preference.)
Use Elastic Bands

Elastic bands are also a very common way of keeping the back of your holga on. Two usually does the job. I don’t usually use this method on its own as I’m worried they could roll off in your bag, but combined with a bit of tape, this can really make things more secure.
Use Velcro
Velcro is becoming a very popular way of keeping the back of your holga on because its looks really neat, and its built to last. Its done using the sides of the camera and looks a little something like this.

The great thing is its really cheap and easy to do this as well. Velcro costs as little as £3 per mtr. Self adhesive velcro is also available to use.
If you have any other suggestions feel free to add them in a comment

My personal preference is electrical tape as well, however I’m partial to orange. It all started quite by accident. I lost my trusty roll of black electrical tape one day. I was tearing apart the house and my husband asked me what I was lookng for. I told him I’d lost my black electrical tape. He let me look for another 5 or so minutes before saying, “well, I don’t have BLACK electrical tape, but I do have orange. Will that work?”. I was so happy to just be able to pit the Holga back together I didn’t care what color of was. I got tremendously good pictures out of that roll. Now orange electrical tape is my good luck charm!

@ WHitney, haha thats hilarious, and a cool story. I had to use yellow the other week but Im convinced that it was slightly transparent…
Absolute0 - Is that with just using the clips?

I’m just using the clips… Must be a lucky guy.

nice! I’ve heard you can bend the clips to help them stay on better, but I think I would rather tape
Exxley on Aug 2, 2008
Yep… no risk with tape…

Tape is probably the safest option. I think im going to try velcro soon though

I just found this tutorial on slightly bending the clips:

cheers for the info, i’ve looked at this but i couldn’t work out what it was saying! I tried to follow it as well as i could but it still seemed to make little difference! If you’ve worked out how to do it though thats great and good luck!
happy holgering

my 135bc was a birthday gift, and if the back fell off I know I would cry — at least the first time.

hello there!
with the 135 you are much less likely to lose the back, the 135 has a much better method of fastening and also it has a hinge, the 120 models don’t have any of this, so i wouldn’t worry about that.

The back of my holga came off too but it was in dark lighting and indoors!! Is there no point getting the film developed or will it just be a couple of pictures ruined? I’ve looked for answers by google but nothing seems to come up apart from this forum!! Hope someone can shed some light!! no pun intended!!

Hey Emma, in my experience you should be ok. The frame that was ouot over the camera may be ruined but the others that were coiled around the spools should be fine.
Hope that helps
