Flocking The Inside Of Your Holga Camera

In this tutorial, I will show you how to successfully ‘Flock’ the inside of your Holga camera.

Flocking is a very popular modification and what it involves is spraying the inside of your Holga camera in a matt black paint.

The reason for this? Matt is a much more absorbent texture than the very shiny inside of your plastic Holga body, and therefore less light bounces around when a picture is being taken. This reduces light leaks and can help to increase contrast.

Here is what you need:

  • 1x Holga Camera
  • 1x Can of matt black spray
  • 1x Roll of tape (can be any colour)
  • Paper or any other material for masking off an area to spray.
1. Turn over your holga and take everything out, such as previous taping, your spool and your masks. As you can see things are a little shiney in there!

2. Get some decent electrical tape

3. Begin to mask off all around the back of the Holga, you just want the inside where the film goes to be sprayed, Kill that overspill!

4. As a precaution I also decided to take my lens off. You don’t have to do this but it worked out a lot easier.

5. Don’t forget to mask the bits of foam that put pressure on your film, this will keep them soft and spongy!

6. Move to a well ventiated area, grab your spray and paper and spread it out.

7. Now you want lots of nice thin coats, so keep your spray can about 30cm away and use quick bursts to avoid spitting. You may want to practice on some wood first. Make sure the can is well shaken before you fire!

8. And that’s it! Check all the nooks and crannies are done and then remove your masking. As you can see its much improved from the first photo. It looks even more matted in real life but this is the best I could do :)

Is it okay if the numbers on the back of the camera of the film are upside down?

    hey, yeah that’s completely normal.

Its strange that the Holga does this, and it confuses quite a few people.

I’ll make a post about it soon to clear it up once and for all :)
